After a long day of driving it’s nice to unwind. Not everyone is a fan of sitting in a drivers room. So how do you relax on your down time?

With a little bit of planning you can keep yourself occupied when you’re not rolling. We’ll look at somethings other than TV/movie streaming services. Not that there’s anything wrong with curling up in the bunk and watching a movie on Netflix.

New Hobbies

Photography

People love looking at pictures. Truck drivers have lots of opportunities to take and share unique pictures.

The best part is you don’t need any special gear, your phone is all you need. In Fact, there’s plenty of free photo editing apps available.

You’ll quickly gain a following a following on Instagram, Facebook, or a website. All you need to do is learn a few photography techniques and your on your way. Be sure to tell a story with your photos. You could also pick a theme, like cool trucks, document various truck stops, cars, or whatever you’re interested in.

Podcasts

There are podcasts for every interest you can think of. To be fair there are lots of podcasts for every interest.

Google and Apple are the largest podcast services. Spotify has also put a lot of time and money into building their podcast network. Search by your various interests and load up on lots of free content.

Maybe you have knowledge you want to share and you want to start a podcast of your own. There’s nothing stopping you from grabbing a USB mic and start recording. You can use Zoom to create a podcast with a friend.

Reading

There’s nothing like sitting down with a good book. Download books on your phone or tablet and enjoy a good read.

Obviously Amazon is the leader in digital books but we found a few services to download some good reads.

Audiobooks are a good choice too. Audible is the big guy on the block for audiobooks. Sit back and listen to your favorite books. Both Google (Android) and Apple sell books and audiobooks in there stores too.

Side Gigs

Passive incomes are great. You can earn a few bucks on the side in your free time. It’s not for everyone. It’s understandable that more work is the last thing you want after a hard day work. But often people turn their hobby into a small revenue stream.

We’ve already discussed two things that can turn into a passive income – photography and podcasting. You can generate some income even with a small but interested audience.

Anything from writing to cooking can earn you a few bucks on the side.

The Importance of Resting

Trucking is a hard and stressful job. It’s important to unwind and enjoy your downtime. So Start a new hobby, watch a good movie, read a good book, or do whatever it is that helps you relax and clear your mind.
