Truck Parking
Parking once again ranks as top critical issue for truckers survey finds – Truckers once again have ranked truck parking as the number one issue they face in the course of doing their jobs, according to a new survey released over the weekend. However, the American Transportation Research Institute’s annual Critical Issues in Trucking survey found that carriers ranked the economy as their number one concern. The economy was also the top issue when all responses were ranked.
NYS Thruway Ontario Service Area opens after major renovation – The New York State Thruway Authority recently announced the reopening of the newly renovated Ontario Service Area located on Interstate 90 westbound between exit 46 (Rochester – Corning – I-390) and exit 47 (Rochester – LeRoy – I-490 – NY Route 19).
Truck parking projects in three states get millions in funding – A total of 44 projects were selected in this round of funding, including three that will expand truck parking capacity. Among those are projects in Ohio, Wisconsin and Nevada.
TA opens Oklahoma location with 80 truck parking spaces – The Savanna location is a franchised TA Express store located at 9062 US-69, off of US-69 at mile marker 82. This is the 11th TA franchise location to open in 2024.
Pilot Company opens travel center in New Mexico – The Pilot Company announced the launch of a new One9 travel center in Tucumcari, New Mexico.
2 new TA locations in Pennsylvania combined add 287 parking spaces – TravelCenters of America recently opened two new TA Express locations along Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania. Combined, they have 287 truck parking spaces.
Love’s opens truck stops in Kansas and Mississippi, adding 206 truck parking spots to network – On October 24, Love’s announced the opening of the Wichita and Hattiesburg stores, bringing the total number of Love’s locations to more than 650.
Trucking Enforcement
Over 1,100 citations issued during multi-week commercial vehicle enforcement effort on four Ohio interstates – The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) and inspectors conducted 2,014 inspections throughout the initiative and issued 1,108 citations for violations including faulty brake systems, damaged tires with missing or snapped lug nuts, and load securement issues.
CVSA Releases 2024 International Roadcheck Results – Commercial motor vehicle enforcement personnel in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. conducted 48,761 inspections during this year’s International Roadcheck, which took place May 14-16. Seventy-seven percent of commercial motor vehicles and 95.2% of commercial motor vehicle drivers did not have any out-of-service (OOS) violations.
Nearly 13% of inspected commercial vehicles taken out-of-service during Brake Safety Week – A total of 16,725 inspections were conducted during the week-long effort, and 2,149 of these commercial vehicles had brake-related out-of-service violations, a 12.8% out-of-service rate.

I-40 reopening could take ‘months or years’: DOT Secretary Buttigieg – After Hurricane Helene closed almost 40 miles of I-40 in western North Carolina, floodwaters destroying some parts of the major east-west artery, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said despite the entire government’s best efforts, reopening could take billions of dollars and months or even years.
Washington State commercial vehicle chain requirements go into effect November 1 – All vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVW shall carry a minimum of 2 extra chains for use in the event that road conditions require the use of more chains or that chains in use are broken or otherwise made useless, WAC 204-24-050 (2) (f). Approved chains for vehicles over 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight shall have at least two side chains attached sufficient cross chains of hardened metal so that at least one cross-chain is in contact with the road surface at all times. Plastic chains shall not be allowed. The Washington State Patrol may approve other devices as chains if the devices are equivalent to regular chains in performance (cable chains allowable).
Colorado outlaws motorists from using hand-held devices while driving – A new Colorado law will go into effect on Jan. 1 that prohibits drivers from using a mobile electronic device while driving, though hands-free accessories are permitted.
