House Bill Includes $200 Million for Truck Parking Projects – “A transportation bill approved June 27 by a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee includes $200 million for truck parking operations nationwide. The Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee easily approved a fiscal 2025 bill that would ensure funding for myriad programs and systems managed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.”

TA Express with 75 truck parking spots open for business in Texas – “TravelCenters of America (TA) recently opened a store in Pleasanton, Texas. The franchised TA Express store is located at mile marker 109 off I-37/Highway 97 in Pleasanton.”

TravelCenters of America adds 4 locations; SC, OR, and 2 in NV – “TravelCenters of America today announced the addition of four sites to its 300+ travel center network. In June, TA acquired and opened sites in Cowpens, South Carolina and Coburg, Oregon; and last week, TA opened two franchised sites in Henderson, Nevada.”

Newest Love’s opens in northwest Ohio off U.S. 30; has 86 parking spots – “The new Love’s is located in Delphos at 1910 E. 5th St. off of U.S. 30 and Lincoln Highway. Delphos is about 47 miles southeast of Fort Wayne, Indiana.”

Love’s opens Ohio location with 86 truck parking spaces – “Love’s Travel Stops recently opened a new store in Delphos, Ohio. The new Delphos Love’s is located at 1910 E 5th Street, off of US 30.”

Love’s reopens New Mexico truck stop after remodel – “Love’s Travel Stops recently reopened a New Mexico truck stop following a major remodel. On July 26, Love’s announced that the Las Cruces, New Mexico, had reopened for business after the store was rebuilt from the ground up.”

Trucking Safety

FMCSA warns of phishing emails seeking personal information – “The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is warning members of the trucking industry to be on the lookout for fraudulent emails seeking personal information.”

86% of non-commercial drivers at-fault in fatal crashes involving trucks this year, OPP says – “Almost 20% of fatal collisions in Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) jurisdictions involved transport trucks this year, causing 31 deaths. According to an OPP news release, 86% of the crashes were linked to poor behaviors on the part of non-commercial drivers. Commercial drivers were at-fault in the remaining 14% of the collisions.”

Big rigs banned from left lane on parts of I-70 in Colorado starting in August – “On August 7, 2024, the new Commercial Vehicle Highway Safety Measures law (formerly SB24-100), will go into effect in Colorado. The bill was signed into law by  Colorado Governor Jared Polis on May 20, 2024.”

Ontario’s speed limit increase to 110 km/h on selected highways comes into effect – “Starting July 12, the Ontario government has implemented a new speed limit of 110 km/h on several sections of provincial highways. This move extends the existing higher-speed zones and introduces new ones across the province.”

Speed limiters: Rule pushed off until May 2025; coalition complains – “When the Department of Transportation’s Spring Regulatory Agenda was published earlier this month, it extended the timeline for implementation of a speed limiter regulation — again — this time until May of next year.”

Drivers rank camera as top safety tech, as long as it faces outward – “More than 60% of respondents to CCJ’s What Drivers Want survey, conducted in partnership with Lytx, said a forward-facing camera has the greatest impact on improving truck driver safety. A tie for a distant second place, with 31% each and largely driven by strength among company drivers, was a collision mitigation system and lane departure warning system.”

Trucking

Two Canadian dealership service teams to compete at global Volvo contest – “The Regenerates – Beaver Truck Centre, Winnipeg, and Globetrotters – Sterling Truck & Trailer Sales, Regina, will be among four North American dealership service teams participating in the competition. The top 44 teams from around the world will compete for recognition as the top service team during the September 9-13 event at Volvo’s global headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden.”

Toll hike now in effect on Indiana Toll Road – “Effective July 1, 2024, the toll rate for a full-length, 157-mile trip along the Indiana Toll Road increased to $15.54 for a Class 2 passenger vehicle and to $83.86 for a Class 5 truck, according to the ITR Concession Company LLC (ITRCC).”

CTA Warns of Potential Border Ramifications of CDC Dog Import Rules – “The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will implement a policy on Aug. 1 that has the potential to cause significant disruption to commercial vehicle travel and all cross-border trade, says the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA).”

Canadian government engages with CDC to clarify new U.S. dog import rules – “The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says it has been engaging with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to seek solutions and clarify new dog import rules intended to prevent the spread of rabies. The requirements are set to take effect on Aug. 1.”

Ontario Targets Predatory Towing Practices – “Cracking down on predatory towing, Ontario now requires tow truck drivers and vehicle storage operators to have a certificate to operate in the first such move by a Canadian province.”
