Large Trucking Companies vs Smaller Trucking Companies
I’ve been at this job for decades now, and when I speak to others about the difference between larger trucking firms vs. smaller ones, it always comes down to a drivers personal experience with different companies.
Len Dubois Trucking is a local midsize trucking company running about 65 company and owner-operator trucks. We are not a large national firm with locations across Canada, and we’re larger than a ten truck shop. We’re large enough to be competitive with anyone, attract experienced operations people and offer stability, and small enough that I know and communicate with the entire team, including drivers and owner ops.
Advantages of Smaller Local Trucking Companies
Local trucking companies have some advantages in offering a more competitive compensation package. We have some specialized clients who can pay higher. Plus, we can get feedback directly from our drivers about our compensation competitiveness. It’s hard to get useable feedback when you have hundreds or thousands of drivers. Overhead and fixed costs are also lower for local trucking companies.
We offer a family feel. Life happens. We work with our drivers to get them in when they need to be in for family obligations. We know our drivers, and they know the operations and dispatch people. Larger companies sometimes can’t or won’t do that.
I’m not bashing larger firms. Because of they’re size and scale, they need to run their systems tight. Exceptions mostly cannot be accommodated because of their size and scale. Everyone is a replaceable cog in the wheel.
I’ve driven in on the weekend to meet dispatchers and problem solved getting a driver home for a family emergency and still cover client obligations. We’re small enough to get him home without hesitation and large enough to have the drivers and operations talent to put it all together. We understand your value to the team.
Recruiting
We don’t have a team of recruiters who can tell you anything, true or not, because they’ll never see you again. John is our recruiter and safety manager, so you’ll be in regular contact with him. He needs to be honest and upfront from the beginning. That’s how he operates.
Our experienced team works hard to develop relationships with everyone at Len Dubois Trucking. If you want to run with a team of professionals – send a message to Joh, and he’ll get back to you!
