Career truck drivers are professionals. We are subject to training, licensing, and medical restrictions as stringent as those found in any profession, with the possible exception of the aviation industry. We understand and observe strict legislation governing our hours of service, and as a group we are consistently among the safest drivers on the road.
Many of us have driven hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of very safe miles while on the job.
We are safe because we are defensive. We recognize risk factors, and act proactively to keep them from becoming serious accidents. So, when the weather improves and the general population takes to the highways in search of summer adventure, we need to make sure we’re prepared for the hazards that we’re likely to encounter.
Increased Volume
With kids out of school and holidays booked, there will be many more cars on the road, typically sedans, minivans, and small SUVs full of families. The sheer number of vehicles traveling is going to make the roads more difficult, and demand more patience.
Inexperienced Drivers
We drive many more miles than the average citizen. A lot of the things that we do as a matter of course are new to them. Some of the mistakes they make behind the wheel (cutting off a large vehicle, merging slowly, lurking in your “no zone” blind spots) appear to be rude and reckless. If we remember that they’re often simply inexperience, we’re more likely to be able to deal with them safely. Many of these drivers will be towing trailers or driving vehicles larger than they are used to. Be careful around RVs.
Stress
Don’t let the stresses of the highway contribute to bad decisions. A frustrated or angry driver is many times more likely to be involved in an accident than a relaxed one. Keep calm and carry on!
