News flash! Trucking is, kind of, an unhealthy lifestyle. Well, more than kind of. According to Corporate Wellness Magazine, “Statistics from the National Institute of Health show that more than 50 percent of truck drivers are obese, compared to the national rate of 26.7 percent. Compared to the general population, the prevalence of diabetes is 50 percent higher and 87 percent of truck drivers have hypertension or pre-hypertension, compared to the national average of 58.3 percent (JOEM 2009).”

These are horrifying stats! Those numbers mean truckers are shortening their life span. To make it worse – it’s preventable.

The long hours in the driver seat isn’t preventable. How we treat our bodies is well within our control. Better diet and a little bit of daily exercise goes a long way to feeling better and living longer.

Truck Stops are Part of the Problem for Truckers Health

Have you ever purchased fruit at a truck stop? Between $1 – $2 for a piece of fruit is common. The major truck stop chains have great instore specials for their app users. Specials are usually energy drinks, soda, candy, and chips. They even have specials for tobacco!

Obviously, pre-planning so you have affordable quality food is necessary. This helps avoid fast food and junk food. Proper diet and exercise is the best to stay healthy.
